Sunset Photography

1498935318_xkpM7q8 The amazing sunsets of northern New Mexico provide plenty of outlets for my obsession with the colors of dusk. The late summer and early fall sunsets have been anything but disappointing this year, even with my recent move 1000 feet down from El Salto into the hidden valley of Valdez.

Sunsets

Ever since picking photography back up a few years ago, I have been fascinated with capturing the sunset. Some of my favorite earliest digital shots are of the enormous sunsets of West Texas. But since moving to northern New Mexico just over two years ago, I have had the opportunity to capture an incredible variety of colors I could never before imagine.

Another look at the Valdez sunset Sept 30th. On this one I tried a little color cross-process to increase the color contrast.

In particular, the virga showers that are famous here in the Taos Valley have provided some amazing back-lit opportunities, exposing fiery red glows surrounded by blues, purples and oranges that are otherworldly. Since late July the northern New Mexican monsoons have revealed scenes of unimaginable beauty as the sun moved perpendicular to the streaks of precipitation not quite hitting the ground.

For a long time I thought there was nothing more amazing than a West Texas sunset, but even a few clouds here provide a dramatic canvas for the sun to paint colors like you've never experienced anywhere else.
