A Frozen Waterfall to Kick Off 2010

_ Our first New Years' Day in northern New Mexico consisted of a trek across frozen trails to El Salto Falls. The short hike is only about a mile from home, but provides us with a natural enjoyment, year round.

New Years Day at El Salto Falls

It was a beautiful day with plenty of sun and the snow was not too deep to hike through. We had visited earlier after the falls had already frozen, but the ice was growing much closer together from the top of the falls to the bottom this time, and the formation at the bottom was becoming quite massive.

_

In fact, it dwarfed Christina, as you can see in the photo to the left.

The texture of the ice at the bottom of the frozen falls reminded me of cauliflower; never seen anything quite like it before. And Christina noted that the shape of the formation resembled a seal with it's snout sticking straight up in the air.

You can see all the photos I posted from our New Years Day hike here. Also you can learn more about the interesting history of the holy El Salto mountain and the community of Arroyo Seco that was established in it's shadow over 200 years ago at the Village of Arroyo Seco's website.
